Living Soil Ecosystems
Healthy topsoil contains billions of microorganisms per teaspoon. At Legacy Valley, we feed and protect this underground community. Mycorrhizal fungi networks form naturally — nature's own nutrient delivery system for plant roots — when soil isn't disrupted by synthetic inputs.
Varietal Selection & Performance
Our five blueberry cultivars were selected for ripening windows, fruit quality, disease resistance, and adaptability to Western NC's climate. By staggering varieties, we extend the picking season for weeks. Our thornless Von blackberries, developed by NC State University, represent breeding science applied to practical farming.
Natural Pest Control Without Sprays
Managing pests without chemicals requires deep knowledge of insect ecology and plant biology. We rely on habitat diversity, beneficial predator insects, and timing-based strategies. Healthy soil and robust plants have natural resistance that chemically-farmed crops simply lack.
Why Chemical-Free Produces Better Nutrition
Organically grown berries often contain higher levels of antioxidants, polyphenols, and vitamins. When a plant isn't artificially propped up by synthetic inputs, it develops its own natural defenses — compounds that also happen to be what makes blueberries so beneficial for human health.
Mulch, Cover & Weed Management
Our hand-worked mulch between plant rows suppresses weeds, retains soil moisture, regulates temperature, and slowly decomposes to add organic matter. Labor-intensive, science-informed groundwork like this produces land that gets healthier every single year.
